The Work You Cannot See
Parable Series, Installment Four Matthew 13:33 | The Parable of the Leaven
JESUS gives another short parable, and if we are not careful, we can move past it too quickly. The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened. One verse. No long explanation. No dramatic scene.
A woman takes leaven and hides it in flour. The leaven works through the whole lump until everything has been affected. That is what JESUS says the Kingdom is like. It works deeply. It changes what it touches from the inside.
The mustard seed taught us not to despise small beginnings. The leaven teaches us not to dismiss hidden transformation.
There are some works of GOD you will not be able to measure at first. No movement on the surface. No proof that something is shifting. But beneath what looks ordinary, HIS Kingdom may already be spreading through places you thought were untouched.
Leaven does not announce itself. It disappears into the flour, gets worked in, becomes unseen, and then begins to influence everything around it.
This is uncomfortable for people who want GOD’s work to be immediately visible. We want evidence, change we can point to, proof that what GOD placed in us is producing something we can measure.
But JESUS compares the Kingdom to leaven hidden in flour. GOD is not limited to what can be seen right now. HE knows how to work beneath the surface, reach places that still look untouched, and begin with what seems small and spread it through the whole life.
The woman in the parable takes the leaven and hides it. That word matters.
Some things GOD plants in you are not meant to be displayed before they are developed. Some changes begin in concealment because they need time to work through the parts of you that still resist them. Some transformations start where no one can applaud them, question them, or interrupt them.
A changed appetite. A softened answer. A desire for GOD that returns after a long season of distance. These may not look large to anyone else, but they may be evidence that the leaven is working.
Hidden work moves through the unseen places, the motives, the desires, the habits, the fears, the private agreements we have made with lesser things.
Real transformation does not always begin with public proof. Sometimes it begins with an inner disturbance. Something you used to tolerate now troubles you. Something you used to chase no longer satisfies you. What you ignored now keeps returning to your attention.
That may be the mercy of GOD moving through the dough.
This is where the parable searches us. Have I allowed the Word of GOD to touch every part of me, or have I kept certain rooms closed?
Once leaven is worked in, it begins to affect the whole. The Word does not leave our speech untouched, our relationships untouched, or our private life untouched. It searches until it reaches the place we were hoping to protect.
Many of us want enough of GOD to feel encouraged, but not enough to be corrected. Enough presence to feel comforted, but not enough to surrender what we keep explaining away. This parable does not let us keep that arrangement.
JESUS says the Kingdom is like leaven hidden in flour until all of it is leavened. All of it. Not the parts we present well. Not the parts that cost us nothing to offer.
GOD is not interested in decorating an unchanged life. HE comes to transform the whole. And that is good news, even when it troubles us.
HE does not only see what is wrong. GOD also sees what can still be made whole by HIS truth. HE sees the places we have called impossible, the patterns we have learned to manage, the wounds we have built habits around. And HE is able to work through every hidden place until HIS life has touched what we thought would always remain the same.
So do not despise the hidden work. Do not abandon the process because transformation has not reached the surface. Assume nothing about what GOD is doing beneath what you can see.
Both the leaven and the Word are working in places you may not know how to name yet. The question is whether you will allow it to keep spreading.

Read Matthew 13:33 slowly. Stay with the image JESUS gives: leaven hidden in flour until the whole lump is affected.
Sit with this: what area of your life have you tried to keep separate from HIS correction?
Practice for the Week
Before you ask GOD for something new, ask HIM to show you where HIS Word is already working.
Each day, write one sentence: GOD, I notice You working in me here; then name the place honestly. Your speech. Your patience. The way you respond when you do not get your way. Do not perform. Pay attention.
Closing Prayer
Father, let YOUR Kingdom work through every part of me. Reach the places I have hidden, protected, or excused. Let YOUR Word move beneath the surface until my whole life is touched by YOUR truth. Give me patience for the work I cannot see yet and honesty where I have resisted YOU. Make me willing to be changed all the way through. Amen.
